Dog Shoes: Yes, They Actually Have a Purpose Other Than ‘Cute’
Many dog owners don’t believe that dog shoes have any benefit for their dogs other than a cute “dog costume” but shoes on a dog can actually prevent a lot of foot injuries that would cost a lot of money at the vet.
Dog shoes are often worn by working dogs. Dog sledders put boots on their dogs to protect their feet from the cold and sharp objects in the ice. Search dogs used to find people in destroyed buildings, such as after an earthquake, have shoes to protect their paws from sharp glass and metal debris.
But dog shoes can be useful for those of us who just have dogs for pets. Many dogs will lick or bite at their feet if they step in something that irritates them. A set of dog shoes can keep things such as antifreeze or oil off of their feet. People who live in cities must walk their dogs over pavement that is spread with salt or de-icer in the wintertime. It is typical for your pet to get a bad case of dog diarrhea when they lick their paws to try to clean off.
People who live in cities also find the sidewalks littered with gum, glass and other debris that might cut open their dog’s feet or get caught between their toes. And, your dog’s paws can get blisters from the hot tar and asphalt in the summertime. For hunters or those living in non-urban areas, dog shoes can keep their dogs from getting burrs or other sharp thorns stuck in their feet. Hikers also put shoes on their dogs, simply because they may be a long distance from medical attention if their dogs get injured.
Dog shoes can also protect items in the household from being damaged. Because a dog’s toenails can damage floors or especially pool liners, many owners have found that dog shoes save a lot of money in repair costs. Dog shoes can also prevent dogs from gnawing at their paws and can help old dogs with poor balance keep from slipping.
Look at your own situation to see if dog shoes are right for your dog. You may find that dog shoes can prevent a large vet bill later.
