Secrets To Training A Dog To Pee On Command
An Example Of How To Potty Train A Puppy
There are a lot of different commands you can teach your dog. Commands such as stay are useful, and some like come are potentially life saving. There are a number of other commands that may not be as important, but they are very convenient. My favorite command is to teach my dog to pee when I ask him to.
Why would I want to do that? I used to participate in agility and obedience competitions, and if my dog urinated in the ring, we were heavily penalized. I taught my dog to pee on command, and before we would go into the competition ring, Id take him for a walk, tellhim to pee, and Id be confident he would not cost us points by doing it at the wrong time.
There are also some other times it is useful. As an example, late at night, when you are tired, the last thing you will want to do is wait for your dog to eventually empty his bladder. If your dog can pee on command, you will be back inside and in your bed very quickly.
You may be visiting your vet, and they may want a urine sample. No problem here, take your dog outside and commans it to pee, and come back in with a freshly voided sample for testing. It is really a very useful behavior for your dog to learn.
Although your dog may not always pee immediately when told to, he will go to the toilet quicker than if he had not been trained.
You can train your dog to urinate when you ask him to at the same time as you are toilet training him. Its easier for him to learn at the same time as he learns where his toileting area is when youre potty training a puppy. However, older dogs are just as capable of learning this command.
Take your dog outside to his toileting area, and as he urinates, give him whatever command youve chosen - it could be toilet or pee or even tinkle. It does not matter, just as long as you are consistent, and you use the same command every time.
When your dog urinates, give it lots of praise and cuddles. That way, while hes learning where hes allowed to pee, hes also associating it with your command.
You must give your dog this same command every time it pees, and reward him when he gets it right. This means youll have to do it while youre out walking, or at the beach. You may get some odd looks from other people, but dont let a chance go by to reinforce what your command means.
Unlike commands like sit or drop, which can be very quick to teach using food, training your dog to pee on command is a slow process. It will take time, repetition and a lot of patience, and in some cases, dogs do not ever get it. Dogs are clever though, and in most cases, they eventually learn. When your dog does figure it out. providing your dog has something in it's bladder, it will be very willing to do as you ask. Taking him or her to go potty last thing at night will be so much more convenient.
City Dog House Training For Teaching Potty Training Curbside
The key to house training your puppy to make the transition from going to the bathroom on paper indoors to holding it and waiting until it can go outside is a bit of common sense and outdoor manners. Going from the papers to the outside means you need to carry your puppy to the right area. Small puppies are easy to carry outside, but you may need a carrier of sorts for bigger dogs if you are not strong enough. Once you have finally carried your puppy outside without any incident and all you see before you are blocks and blocks of concrete, where should you go?
It is common sense that certain places like play grounds, flower beds, city trees, landscaping and other places people are should be off limits. Letting a male dog lift his leg on somebody’s garbage can or other things that might be touched by humans is not very nice. Just be prepared to spend some time outdoors with your puppy potty training. A fearful puppy won’t be relaxed enough to want to potty and the puppy can be so distracted by all the stimuli that it won’t want to go outside.
Can your pup focus enough amidst all the noise of traffic and people to ever learn to use the concrete? With training, yes. One technique for outdoor potty training sessions is known as ‘curbing’ and entails having your puppy do his business over a curb or into a gutter. Position your puppy’s rear end over the curb and let it eliminate. Praise the pup quietly and calmly while its going, and praise exuberantly immediately after the act. Just be aware that if you praise too much during the act, your puppy will get distracted and wriggly not a good combination in mid-elimination.
When there is a mistake, don’t panic, just work on it next time and smile at people and pick up after your dog. You cannot drag the puppy away and reprimand him while he is still in the middle of going, rather just make certain he is in the correct location the next time. Make it become a habit and always praise your pup and eventually you will have success with your dog potty training. Life will be easier if you teach your pup to potty on cue. When the time comes for the dog to begin his business, gently repeat the cue words and praise the puppy and when he finishes, praise him again.
Other City Potty Training Options
There are plenty of alternative potty areas for pet owners who live in urban settings that they may not even have considered like utilizing a fenced or walled off rooftop which may be more convenient than getting down to the street. Be certain the place is properly secured with a sturdy fence that the dog cannot squeeze through. If it’s walled, keep your dog on a leash to ensure the pup doesn’t decide to explore the drop on the other side. A terrace is another good alternative, especially for bigger dogs. Additionally, some buildings have a basement area or storage room that can double as a potty area, just choose a concrete or tiled area that’s easy to clean and hose off.
A few people have installed graveled pits or grass strips, fake and real, on their patios for dogs to use, however, these tend to get dirty quickly. You have to be very consistent with replacing the grass and cleanup when it is necessary to keep it clean enough so your dog will continue using them. Remember that a foul odor from the potty area can create problems for you and your neighbors, especially during the summer, so keep all areas clean and tidy. Dog house training, inside or out needs a little bit of time and patience, but it is well worth the effort.
Potty Training Puppies Can Be Fun With A Healthy Approach
Potty training puppies can be a lot of fun with an attitude of healthy helpfulness. Consider taking a look at the mental health of a new puppy. Imagine what it would be like for puppies to be exploring in the world they call home. As far back as puppies remember may only be a few minutes ago. When training the puppies, remember this when they have an accident. Puppies want to please and when that memory gets around to charging back they will amaze the most skeptical human. Meanwhile, keep shoes up along with anything else that is not a chew toy. Give positive reinforcements such as praise in that happy voice they will love. Keep a small treat on hand as a reward for proper potty power.
Accidents seen while the puppy is in the act only need a 'no' and a tap of the shoe on the floor." Any yelling will make potty training a puppy a nervous experience. It does not do any good to correct a puppy after the fact. Just quietly clean up. Be sure to put newspaper or puppy pads in an indoor area where the puppy is allowed to go to the bathroom. This alternative to outdoors is always good to have just if there is a delay in getting home. When your puppy does its business on your carpet be sure to scrub well to get rid of any lingering scent.
Crate training works for new puppies and a crate provides a sanctuary for your new puppy. Some people keep their new puppies in a crate, while at work. While this might work for some types of dogs, puppies may have a difficult time holding on. It may be better to allow them to be in an area where it is okay to go potty. It is best not to put newspapers or puppy pads next to a crate when doing potty training puppies. This is because of the odourl factor, because of the fact that they don't want to sleep next to bad smells.
Try to keep puppies on a schedule as much as possible. When potty training puppies they should go outside after meals and naps. Spending time outdoors everyday also gives puppies and their owners much needed exercise. Incorporate trips out with puppy time. One last little bonus tip for the single person is that a puppy can attract people. Why don't you have a little fun with that?
